When drawing white fur, I always pay attention to the midtones just as much as the highlights and shadows. The midtones can often be forgotten but if that happens the fur can look more coarse which for long, soft cat fur like this, is the complete opposite texture we want to create. The midtones are built up through not only the pencil layers but softening and blending existing layers to create separate values. When using PanPastels for the base layer for fur, I prefer to get this layer blended so that there are no harsh edges between colour changes. This makes it much easier to add details on top. However, it's really important not to add to much PanPastel at this stage because filling the tooth of the paper will mean we can't add details on top with the pencils. Drawing black fur in pastels requires the right layering process. My biggest tip is to make sure that the base layer is dark enough. If it's to light the entire dog is going to end up more of a grey colour and lack significant contrast which massively effects how realistic the finished portrait looks. It's bold to go so dark with the first layer but the wonderful thing about pastels is that we can layer light over dark so easily that we have that reassurance and flexibility =). | Zara's Pet Port
