Lava tubes form as the surface of an active lava flow cools and slowly roofs over. The lava breakouts from Puʻu ʻŌʻō on May 24 formed flows that are growing to both the north and east. Scientists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory went out into the field last week to investigate and found a skylight in a newly formed lava tube. Lava tubes are essentially caves through which lava used to flow under the lunar surface. Here on Earth, we have lava tubes that are studied by researchers in order to understand them on other worlds. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has seen pits on the surface of the Moon that look like they could lead to a network of lava tubes.
