In 1962, Sam Gilliam moved from Kentucky to Washington, D.C., where he has worked ever since. Among many innovations, Gilliam broke away from the rectangular stretcher and the wall, introducing unstretched, unframed canvases, sometimes of monumental scale, that folded and draped to envelop the viewer in color. Before visitors step into our galleries, they are greeted with waves of color in Huber Court. Canvases of blue, green, orange, red, and yellow draw museumgoers’ eyes upward, where they experience ‘Norfolk Keels’ by Sam Gilliam. A recognized figure of the Washington Color School, Gilliam tested the boundaries of color, form, and the canvas itself. Inspired by jazz musicians stepping beyond written notes, Gilliam’s paintings break free from wooden stretchers, creating a harmony of architectural sp

“Painting has guts.” –Sam Gilliam 🎨 Inspired by jazz and attuned to the social movements of the late 1960s, Gilliam experimented with the material properties of painting. As seen in his work "Leaf," the artist worked without a brush, pouring acrylic paint on lengths of canvas, which he folded to create complex and vivid effects. 👀 See “Leaf” in the free exhibition “Slip Zone,” on view now through July 10. | Dallas Museum of Art

Sam Gilliam’s "Carousel State" (1968), a recent gift of the artist to The Met collection, is now on view in Gallery 923. In “Carousel State,” the canvas has been liberated from its stretcher, straddling the wall and our space, draped to hang to a width of 20 feet (6.1 m). An early example of Gilliam’s signature “drape paintings,” this work was made through a novel process of dripping, smearing, staining, and splashing paint onto the raw canvas, often spreading and merging colors by pressing and

“I want to invite everyone to pay attention and to lean into the color all around us. Colors that we might not have language for yet. The colors that resonate with us—to really lean into the energy and the language of colors all around us.” In a new Artful Practices for Well-Being audio guide Sabrina Sarro, psychotherapist and MFA candidate, leads us on a guided meditation on color in Sam Gilliam’s “10/27/69.” Listen to the full audio: mo.ma/3F1DhM4 New on view! One of the boldest innovators of postwar American painting, Sam Gilliam often referred to the influence, impact, and ethos of jazz and musical improvisation on his work. To honor the artist’s legacy, Pace Live presented a two-part concert with musicians Jason Moran and Slauson Malone 1 (Jasper Marsalis), who in turn have been influenced by Gilliam. Sam Gilliam, Sewing Fields has officially opened at IMMA💫 This exhibition presents the work of pioneering abstract artist Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) one of the great innovators in post-war American painting. Emerging in the mid-1960s, his canonical ‘Drape’ paintings merged painting, sculpture, and performance in conversation with architecture in entirely new ways. ‘Sewing Fields’ highlights Gilliam’s connection to Ireland, where a transformative residency at the @ballinglen_arts_foundation in the

Sam Gilliam's inaugural exhibition with the gallery, "Existed Existing" debuts new works and artist-led installations that reflect the culmination of his six-decade-long career with color. Here the artist discusses the three bodies of work on view: large-scale paintings, some titled as tributes to influential Black contemporary and historical figures; a series of geometric color-drenched wood objects; and monochromatic paintings on Japanese washi paper. | Pace Gallery
