I have a bit of a hit and Miss process with toning my panel/canvas… sometimes I go for the raw sienna base, but other times, I use a complimentary colour. Do you ever wonder why artists paint a color over their blank canvas? This is called “toning” the canvas. Normally it’s a neutral color but can be a bright color as well! Van Gogh loved those electric bright colors for toning. This helps me eliminate the fear of the “white canvas” . It also helps me to see the colors I’m using better as I add them against a colored background. I’m not a classical painter but I’m an artist and I like to do what works for me!
